I was really excited today when I saw the work being carried out by Swinton brothers, Jayson and Dan Redshaw and their team of amazing and dedicated veteran volunteers to create the first 'Veterans Garage'
"Oooh a garage for veterans" you might say. But oh no, it is far more than that and their plans for the site will blow you away!!! True community and veteran heroes in my view.
The community project is to restore a Grade 2 listed WWII airport terminal building into a base for a classic car & motorcycle restoration garage.
Supporting North West Veterans suffering from recent combat stress, the garage will also work to alleviate some of the loneliness and isolation of the older generation.
The building at the City Airport site in Barton, will create a welcoming environment for ex-servicemen of all ages to collaborate, restoring classic cars and motorcycles, or simply popping down for a cuppa and a chat all the while raising money and awareness.
At the same time this project will restore this listed building to house a vibrant and buzzing community club house for car, motorcycle, scooter, and aviation enthusiasts.
All ages and genders will be made to feel welcome at this central hub, which will boast stylish lounges, club meeting and business facilities, and a smoke house with incredible food and beverages.
There is also talk of automobile and military festivals and camping in the acres of fields they have and a place for children to come and visit and sit in military vehicles and a practice facility for the Salford Reds youth team.
As a not-for-profit venture, the garage will also play host to a community car club, giving freedom to raise funds for other causes across the Northwest, simultaneously providing ex-servicemen with employment opportunities.
Here's Salford Veterans Champion, Councillor Barry Warner, Barbara Keeley MP, Dan Redshaw, Tommy a 92 year old SAS veteran (who could tell you a tale or two!) and myself.
